WE boost knowledge sharing and valorisation for TTO´s and KTO´s

Through advanced skills development, open-access upgraded service portfolios, and tailored curricula for students and early-career researchers, Knowledge to Impact will foster entrepreneurship, enhance innovation ecosystems, and support Europe’s resilience, autonomy, and long-term competitiveness.

About the project

From knowledge to impact

Knowledge2Impact tackles Europe's persistent knowledge-to-market gap by transforming Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) and Knowledge Transfer Offices (KTOs) into a professional, coordinated, innovation-driven service ecosystem — turning research excellence into economic and societal value, and positioning universities as strategic drivers of Europe's competitiveness, resilience and autonomy.

The challenge

Europe produces 20% of the world's knowledge. Too little of it reaches the market.

European researchers publish more, and are cited more, than almost anyone else on earth. But only a third of EU patents are ever commercially exploited — and while 28% of researchers say they'd like to launch a spin-off, only 3% ever do. Knowledge2Impact exists to close that gap.

19.6% of global scientific publications come from Europe
43.3% of global patent applications filed by European innovators (2024)
1/3 of EU patents are ever commercially exploited
28% → 3% researchers who want to spin off vs. who actually do

What we do

Six workstreams, one goal

Knowledge2Impact combines system-level tools with hands-on capacity building — for TTO/KTO professionals, students, researchers and the industry and policy partners around them.

Impact Service Toolbox

A curated package of upgraded TTO/KTO services covering IP management, licensing, spin-off support, due diligence and societal/policy uptake — openly accessible to universities and research organisations across Europe.

AI Toolkit for TTOs

An on-premises, human-in-the-loop AI toolkit that speeds up disclosure drafting, prior-art checks, technology readiness assessment and investor matchmaking — piloted in four consortium TTOs.

Impact Catalyst Programme

Training, mentoring and shadowing visits that build the skills of TTO/KTO staff in market and societal value detection — piloted internally, then opened to widening-country offices.

Impact Creator Programme

Curricula, an Impact Tech Summer School and simultaneous cross-border Hackathons that build entrepreneurial and IP skills in students and early-career researchers.

Cascade Funding

Open calls channel funding and training directly to TTOs/KTOs in widening countries that haven't yet taken part in EU capacity-building actions — extending the programme well beyond the consortium.

GoodTech Living Labs

Co-creation with researchers, students, industry, policymakers and citizens — including a dedicated AI Ethics Living Lab — to keep upgraded services trustworthy, inclusive and grounded in real needs.

The consortium

12 partners, 8 countries

Knowledge2Impact is delivered by a consortium spanning higher education, technology transfer, entrepreneurship and ecosystem building — and is embedded in the wider CloudEARTHi Initiative of 40+ organisations across 19 countries.

“Knowledge is like fine wine. The researcher brews it, the scientific paper bottles it, the peer review tastes it, the journal sticks a label on it, and archive systems store it carefully in a cellar. Splendid! Just one small problem: wine is only useful when somebody drinks it. Wine in a bottle does not quench thirst. Knowledge Translation opens the bottle, pours the wine into a glass, and serves it.”
